Low Girl is the work of multi-instrumentalist Sarah Cosgrove and her bandmates Toby, Tom and Brad. Described by DIYMagazine as “a peppy new pop talent”, the band released debut EP Big Now in May 2021 and haven’t looked back since. The EP was preceded by the release of the title track, which picked up support from BBC Radio 1, Radio X and was featured on the ‘New Music Fix’ playlist on BBC 6Music, as well as strong support from DIY, The Line of Best Fitand Spotify to name a few.
Always wanting to present bodies of work, Low Girl have released three EPs to date, alongside their four singles. Steve Lamacq is a big supporter at BBC 6music, with previous single ‘Bored’ going on to be playlisted, alongside Jack Saunders at BBC Radio 1, the station that made their second single ‘So Cool’ BBC Introducing TOTW. Spotify support has also been strong for the band, with three of their five single releases hitting the coveted New Music Friday UK playlists, as well as Hot New Bands, Fresh Finds and Melomania.
On Friday 5th January 2024, the band release another irresistible piece of alt-pop and their most ambitious single yet, ‘Icarus’. The track takes the band to a new level, cementing the exciting groundwork they have put in place over the last couple of years.
Frontperson, Sarah Cosgrove explains… “Icarus is a lot to do with my tendency to make myself smaller, whether that’s to avoid criticism or appease others. I actually wrote this song years ago as a slow piano ballad, and until recently it had pretty much been left behind. My right-hand man, Toby, has always been fond of the melody and words, so, with his encouragement, I started reworking it as a dream pop track.”
“I went to see Alvvays this summer, at a time where it felt like a lot was falling apart. They played this song called ‘In Undertow’ which repeats the lyric ‘there’s no turning back’. It gave me a lot of courage in that moment, and has stuck with me ever since. As a tribute, I ad-libbed ‘I’m making a sound, no turning back now’ in the final chorus of Icarus. It feels to me like I conquered my desire to disappear into the crowd, instead resolving to get back on the stage and keep making music.”
Icarus continues themes found across Low Girl’s music – feelings of loneliness, self-worth, mental health and the constant trials and struggles of finding one’s identity growing up.
On the project, Sarah explains… “For so long I’ve wanted nothing more than to be normal, and to not have to mask what I feel. But as I get older, I think more and more about what kind of impression I want to leave. I don’t think I want to leave the impression of being normal or perfect. I think I want to make sure that people who feel like me know it’s okay, and know that they aren’t alone in their experiences. I think about all the times I was crying out to be heard as a teenager, and even as an adult. I know what I needed to hear in those moments, and I want to create that voice for someone else through my writing.
Low Girl is full of bittersweet melancholy for me, but you also have these happier songs you can escape into that capture the pure joy that exists in this group. I know for the boys, as big-time musos, being in a band is a dream they’ve had since they were kids watching MTV, or pretending to play guitar on a tennis racket. You kind of wish you could bottle those moments where someone comes up with a new part for a song and the energy in the room starts to buzz. There’s almost a childlike glee to what we get to do, but there’s also this unifying sense of purpose.
I think if I was as ‘normal’ as I had wanted to be, Low Girl wouldn’t exist.”
A debut, sold-out London headline show at The Lexington, BBC introducing slots at Reading & Leeds, SXSW and tour supports with Dream Wife, Pom Poko, October Drift and The Murder Capital have cemented the live sound of a band coming of age.
Citing artists ranging from King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard to King Princess, Phoebe Bridgers as inspiration, the breadth of Low Girls’ influences are clear to hear but never detracts from their own unique identity and innate songwriting ability.
“I think in a world where music is getting faster, louder, angrier. The artists that stick to perhaps the intricacies a little more seem to be having a bigger impact. It’s like a welcome respite from the appetite for chaos that we often have. Life is all about balance at the end of day, isn’t it? Low Girl bring the balance really nicely. Rhythms that play it cool, a soft touching vocal that states ‘I did it for me’. That’s rule number one in life, isn’t it. Always do it for yourself, first and foremost. Low Girl abiding by that brilliantly on that song right there, which will be a welcome addition to your playlist if you’ll have it.” – Jack Saunders
